What are online courses?

Careerlearn brings you classes via e-mail and the internet. Using any computer with a modem, you dial into the internet for assignments, lecture notes, and discussions with the instructor and other students. Exchange essays, exams, and all other materials by computer. You can take an online course from home, from work, or from anywhere in the world where you can access the internet.

What organization operates Careerlearn?

Careerlearn is the online learning program of Wilson Technological Center. Wilson Tech is the career and technical education division of Western Suffolk BOCES, a non-profit intermediate educational organization located on Long Island, New York. Wilson Tech has offered adult education classes since 1963.

While the primary function of BOCES is to serve the 18 school districts in western Suffolk County, in 1998 Wilson Tech decided to use the power and convenience of the internet to provide career training 24/7. Adults have responded favorably to our online courses where they can boost their job skills at their own pace. To meet the demand for this independent style of job training, we add new courses each week.

Browse through our online course catalog and register for a course that will help you learn a new skill, earn a promotion, or prepare for a career change. You'll be glad you went online! Our courses are affordable and our programs and instructors are grounded in real experience in the workplace.

How does an online courses differ from a traditional course?

The only difference between an online course and a traditional course is the method of delivery. As with any adult education course, you must complete reading assignments, take tests, and participate in other activities. The video or audio program is really just the "lecture" part of the regular class.

Will I receive a certificate indicating that I have taken a course at Careerlearn?

Yes. Certificates of Completion are issued to all students in instructor-led courses who have successfully met the course requirements. To be eligible for a certificate, you must participate in 80% of the on line class sessions and have an instructor's recommendation stating that you have completed all other course requirements with an average grade of 80%. Your certificate will be mailed to you.

Can I earn CEUs for online courses from Careerlearn?

Yes, Instructor led Careerlearn courses are approved for Continuing Education Credits from the International Association of Continuing Education and Training. CEUs are often accepted for partial credit by colleges as well as for advancement on the job. Check with your company's Personnel Department.

Do these courses qualify for employee tuition reimbursement?

That is solely up to your employer. Upon the completion of a course you may request an "Employee Tuition Reimbursement Letter" from the online administrator. We will mail the letter directly to your employer. To request a letter, visit our student services section and fill out the request form.

When are the courses available?

All online courses are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You can study whenever you want!

When can I start an online course?

Within 72 hours of registering, we email you a password. Once you receive your password, you can begin your online course. You can register to begin an enhanced tutorial course at any time. The instructor-led courses, however, are available during specific 'semesters'.  Please refer to the individual courses for the exact dates.

How long are Careerlearn courses?

Courses vary from one week to 10 months. Check the online catalog for the length of the course that interests you.

How long do I have to complete the course?

All instructor led courses:  Your password will be deactivated two weeks after the last day of class. All enhanced tutorial courses:  Your password will be deactivated after 12 weeks.

What is the difference between an enhanced tutorial and an instructor-led course?

The two types of on-line programs vary by the amount of involvement of the instructor.

Instructor-Led Courses

For these on-line courses, you are assigned an instructor who will answer specific questions, lead weekly chat room discussions, and evaluate your work. You can study at the time of day you prefer, so long as you keep pace with the course schedule. Courses run for various lengths of time within a prescribed semester. Spring semester: February to June; Summer semester: July to August

Self-paced enhanced Tutorials

Enhanced tutorials have audio lectures given by a cyber instructor.  There is no software or textbook to purchase, and they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What happens if I'll be away on business/vacation during part of the instructror-led course?

You have a 10-day grace period for each quiz and final exam. As long as you can live with that ten-day timeframe, you can read each lesson at your leisure, and complete each assignment when it is convenient for you. That's the beauty of taking an online course--they're designed to fit your schedule--not your instructor's! If you have a longer vacation or if you fall behind in your assignments, we will grant you an automatic two-week extension. You are not required to attach a reason to your extension request. One extension will be granted per course.

Can I repeat a lesson or lecture during the course?

Yes. You can repeat any part of a course as many times as you feel necessary to learn the material.

Do I have to buy books?

Instructor-led courses may require a textbook purchase. Refer to our online bookstore or course description for details. Enhanced tutorials do not require a textbook purchase.

Do I have to buy any software?

No additional software is required for any of our courses. Any plug-ins you need are free and available through the internet. Links to these are contained in your course.

What happens if I have a question?

For instructor-led courses, go to the message board in your homeroom. When you need help with a lesson, just post your question or inquiry in the appropriate course discussion area. The instructor, his or her teaching assistant, or one of your fellow students will respond. You also can email your instructor or participate in a live chat session.

May I respond to questions from other students in the discussion area?

The best way to learn a new skill is to teach it to others. If you know the answer to a question in the discussion area, we strongly encourage you to offer your assistance.

What are the system requirements to take an online course?

Click on the "OS Requirements" to see a detailed list of the system requirements and software you will need to participate in an online course through Careerlearn.

Do we get a letter grade for our assignments and final?

No. Careerlearn offers non-credit courses, without letter grades. You will either receive a "Complete" or an "Incomplete."

What happens if I can't run the course on my computer?

Careerlearn offers technical support via email 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Click here  for the support request form:  Live technical support is available weekdays between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST.

How is taking an online course different from reading a computer or software manual?

We believe that computer skills are best acquired by incorporating hands-on experience with information and expert advice. Each of your lessons comes complete with a quiz or simulations that reinforce the material covered in your lesson. Each quiz will be evaluated instantly and returned to you. In addition, many lessons will have assignments that give you practical hands-on experience with the material in your course.

What's more, Careerlearn courses exploit the interactive nature of the internet, virtually ensuring that all of your course-related questions are answered! During an instructor-led course, your instructor, his or her teaching assistant, and your fellow students are just a click away.

In our experience, online learning gives you the practical experience and interaction that a manual or book just cannot give. Also, the dynamic nature of the internet makes it easy for us to frequently update our course material. So, the information you learn is as topical and up-to-date as today's newspaper!

How is taking an online course different from classroom instruction?

In today's fast-paced world, many of us find it difficult to take time away from work and family to attend school. With our online courses, you can "attend class" in the comfort of your own home or office. Just log into your online classroom when you are ready to read your lessons, complete your quizzes and assignments, or communicate with your instructor and fellow students. Our online courses fit your schedule: you can take them before breakfast, during lunch, late at night, or any time you find convenient. The choice is yours! Online courses, however, are not for everybody. Although you will be in contact with your instructor and your classmates through the course discussion areas (instructor-led courses only), learning over the internet is essentially a solitary activity. If you crave face-to-face interaction or anticipate problems completing your lessons in a timely manner, you may fare better in a classroom environment.

How is taking an online course different from video-based instruction?

Again, Careerlearn courses exploit the dynamic and interactive nature of the internet. We can keep our courses more up-to-date and more relevant to your needs than video-based instruction. In addition, the material covered in a six-week course is far more comprehensive than what can be delivered in a one-hour videotape.

6. We are unable to provide refunds for requests received after the second class session or lesson for online courses.

7. Any overpayment accepted will be totally refunded.
